What do you think about old men especially those who past 70 years old? Being sick? Hospital's regular costumer? Or, enjoy their life after so many worked hard for many many years? Well, this old man will give you different perspective about old men.
Hadi Subiyanto, the 75 years old man from Madura who I met in 5 star hotel in Jakarta, Dharmawangsa Hotel.
On Sunday afternoon, I accompanied my dad to attend his friend's wedding party. We're waiting for Maghrib time, so we decided to walk around the hotel since it's 5 star hotel. When we passed the hotel's lobby, we heard beautiful traditional Indonesia song. We thought it's recording but surprisingly, it's live music. Two old men sitting in the edge of the lobby and they played Angklung. I thought it's Bali's traditional music, but it's World Herritage Instrument Angklung.
Then, I tried to talk with one of the old men there, it's Mr. Hadi who told me that it's not Angklung from West Java but it's Angklung from Madura. Wow, Angklung from Madura? I never heard that. That makes me wanna talk with Mr. Hadi.
Mr. Hadi said he's the only one person from Madura who bring Madura's Angklung to Jakarta and there's no other Madura's tribe who play Madura's Angklung in Jakarta. What a surprise! Because many Madura's people are coming to Jakarta and work here but nobody bring Madura's Angklung except Mr. Hadi.
Then, he share his story to me. In the past, he was working with global companies from Germany, Japan, and USA. I'm forget what his job, but he work with Indonesia government for some projects and he's working with expatriates. Moreover, he was an actor for the movie 'Eat, Pray, Love' directed by Ryan Murphy. He played as Bali's shaman, Ketut Liyer.
However, those works didn't satisfied Mr. Hadi. He feels his knowledge will be useful if he can share to younger generations. That's why he become a teacher. He said it's his hobby. What makes me surprise is he built a small school for underprivileged children especially those who have no parents. He's the founder and the teacher in that school until today.
At first, he establish his school under bridge in Lebak Bulus, Jakarta. He teach Indonesia art to underprivileged children such as Madura's Pencak Silat Joko Tole and Madura's Angklung. Mr. Hadi said "it's my hobby, to teach children about art. They are Indonesia's future so I want to leave my experience and knowledge to them".
"I have done so much different works in the past. But I feel there's something missing. In Jakarta, not many Madura people want to perform Madura's art because they're busy with their work. I think if I can share my knowledge and skill to younger generation it will be good for Indonesia future."
"In Jakarta, there are many children who lost their parents and cannot get proper education. So I do what I can do to help them. Teaching is my hobby, I love to do it. It's easy decision to make small school under bridge in Lebak Bulus, Jakarta."
"There's no investor. I establish that school by my own money. Even government didn't give me financial support. I'm okay with that. I didn't need much money to live, my money will be useful for underprivileged children who need education"
"Alhamdulillah I'm still in good health. I have happy life. As long as I still healthy and live, I want to teach underprivileged children. Indonesia's future is in their hand"
"It's free school. They don't need to pay anything. Just come and study. I don't think about getting income. I still got pension and my saving is enough for my life. These children deserve to get better education so I do what I can do to help them. See these children study and develop is more than enough to make me happy"
"There's one day when President of Mitsubishi Japan come to my place and told me they want to invest my school. I'm very happy to hear that but I reject because I want to build this school by my own money. It's great to meet President of Mitsubishi, he came to that dirty place just want to see my students study"
"Now we move to Lubang Buaya, East Jakarta with better place. If you want to visit, just call me"
He gave me his name card and his phone number. It's really inspire me, this 75 years old man still dedicate himself to educate Indonesia children. Teaching is his hobby and he's happy to do that.
Usually, an old man like him have already sick and lay on the bed in hospital. But Mr. Hadi is totally different. He looks good, happy, and charming. He play Angklung very well. Not many old man can do like Mr. Hadi do.
I learn a lot from his story. Even an old man like Mr. Hadi still aim to educate Indonesia children and don't even think about how much income he can get from his school. He makes his school free for underprivileged children. His dedication for Indonesia is huge.
Hey Indonesia young generation, are you still busy with complaining and mocking Indonesia government situation? Are you still lazy to study hard even though you study in good school? Don't you know that so many children out there who can't get education like you because they lost their parents? Did you realize how precious your young life?
Indonesia young people must do what Mr. Hadi do! He's an old man, 75 years old but he only think what he can do to help those underprivileged children. But how about us? Most of us waste our young age to do some stupid things.
Stop doing stupid things! Stop complaining about Indonesia current condition! Think what we can do to contribute to develop Indonesia like educating underprivileged children. Think what we can help to children who can't get education. They are Indonesia's future generation, we shouldn't ignore them! Be grateful that you can go to school until getting Bachelor Degree and getting job! Outside there, there's so many children who can't get education like us!
So let's study hard and contribute to Indonesia development. Mr. Hadi show age doesn't matter. So if 75 years old Mr. Hadi can do, there's no reason for us to not contribute to Indonesia development.
Me and Mr. Hadi |
